Music
LEVEL: FOUNDATIONS
Why:
Music is a powerful way to shift our mood, and a way to share who we are.
Warm-Up:
What’s one song or musical piece that you really love, or that has special meaning for you?
Exploration:
Ask each student to introduce their song to the group, explaining what it is, what it means to them or why they like it, and how they use music to change their mood. Then play the song, of course keeping in mind any rules about which lyrics are safe for school (there are often “clean” versions of songs with explicit lyrics). If time allows, after each song invite other students to share what kind of emotion they felt after listening. Notice any patterns in how the group uses music to shift our moods. If possible, save the playlist for future advisory sessions.
